Oishei grant aids Native American programs Native American Community Services of Erie and Niagara Counties Inc. has received a new $386,000 grant aimed at improving operations. The agency received the four-year core operations improvement grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation to better identify and analyze the needs of the local Native American population. The funds will support the purchase and implementation of a new data collection, reporting and analysis system; completion of a comprehensive community profile and needs assessment for the local, off-reservation Native American population; and then development of a strategic plan to guide how it will meet those needs. Agency executive director Michael Martin says the local Native American population is often left out of various studies or are misrepresentative due to undercounting in census data. The project is also critical to on-going efforts by NACS to more comprehensively address intergenerational issues that stem from historical traumas, such as residential boarding school experiences of community members. NACS, founded in 1975, serves the off-reservation Native American population and others, providing community support services, elder services, cultural programming; economic self-sufficiency, family services, health and wellness and youth services. www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/stories/2009/05/18/daily40.html?ana=from_rss
