Possible artifacts found at railroad dig near San Gabriel Mission Posted: 07/28/2009 12:23:09 PM PDT SAN GABRIEL - An archaeological site has been established at the site of a railroad trench construction project near the San Gabriel Mission. Andy Salas, who claims to be a descendant of the Tongva Indians, the most powerful tribe in the region before Europeans colonized the area in the 1700s, said the site contains remains or artifacts from the Tongva. Officials from the Alameda Corridor East Construction Authority did not confirm Tuesday why the archaeological site had been established. Workers from SWCA Environmental Consultants of South Pasadena were bagging and labeling things at the site, and Robert Ramirez, project manager cultural resources, confirmed the company was collecting archaeological evidence. He declined to say what researchers found at the site www.sgvtribune.com/ci_12930512
