The Associated Press Posted: 07/22/2009 09:34:18 AM MDT ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The University of New Mexico School of Medicine says nine American Indian students have been accepted into the school this summer, twice as many as in any other class. The School of Medicine's dean of admissions, David Bear, says the number also exceeds the school's American Indian enrollment in the previous four years. UNM says most of the new students are from the Southwest, including the Navajo Nation and Santa Domingo Pueblo, but there are students who are Lakota Sioux and Choctaw. Five of the new students graduated from New Mexico high schools and three attended UNM as undergraduates. The university says more than half the students received offers from other medical schools. www.lcsun-news.com/dona_ana_news/ci_12890475
