Native American Cultural Gathering set for Chimney Rock
By Caroline Brown
Thursday, July 16, 2009
Mark your calendars for the 15th annual Chimney Rock Native American Cultural Gathering on July 25 and 26.
There will be familiar faces at the gathering, including the Aztec dancers and groups from Acoma Pueblo.
Andrew Garcia will return with the Tewa Dancers from the North, and three different Hopi groups will also participate.
In addition, more Native American arts and crafts booths have been added this year.
The Chimney Rock Native American Cultural Gathering remains the only two-day multi-tribal event at an archaeological site where the puebloan participants actually dance in the kiva, giving the audience an authentic glimpse at what celebrations may have been like at this distinctive site so many years ago.
Two cultural programs will be presented each day beginning at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Please be at the gate at least 30 minutes prior to the program. Admission is $10 per person, and all proceeds are divided among the singers and dancers. No advance tickets will be sold, and there will be no guided tours at Chimney Rock on either day. Visitors should bring a camping chair.
Come out and celebrate the ongoing presence of indigenous cultures in the area for the last 1,000 years and be part of the 15th annual Chimney Rock Native American Cultural Gathering.
This special event is sponsored by Friends of Native Cultures, with funding provided by Durango Friends of the Arts, San Juan National Forest and Chimney Rock Interpretive Program.
