'What we like to do is teach people about our culture' Posted 7/13/09 More than 2,200 people participated in the 16th annual Howard County Pow-Wow and American Indian festival Saturday and Sunday at the Howard County Fairgrounds, in West Friendship. The powwow featured American Indian dancers, singers, drummers, artists and craft persons. “What we like to do is teach people about our culture and the best way to do that is through the arts,” event organizer Barry Richardson said. “We hope that people will leave the event with more of an interest and curiosity in the American Indians.” More than 32 tribes were represented at the event. An event highlight was the bow and arrow demonstration, Richardson said, adding that other crowd-pleasers included the parade of nations and performances by Aztec fire dancers and Cherokee/Lumbee contemporary singer Kelley Jacobs. “It was pretty special,” Richardson said. “We do this all out of love.” -- Heather Carney www.explorehoward.com/news/63739/american-indian-festival-draws-more-than-2000/
