By Tribune Staff • June 4, 2009 A community meeting is scheduled this week to address Native American civil rights issues on Montana reservations and in Great Falls, among other issues. The meeting held at the Great Falls Housing Authority community hall starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The need for effective civil rights enforcement and a proposed re-formation of a Great Falls branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will be the first meeting topic. The second part of the meeting will deal with the creation of a community center in Great Falls. The center is being proposed by a Chippewa band headquartered in Great Falls. The center site would be a 40-acre commercial area near Hill 57. The Gopher family of Great Falls plans to establish a family-controlled charitable trust to preserve a 13 Star Peace flag, which will be the central focus of the proposed center. In 2001, the National Trust for Historic Preservation designated the flag and the Hill 57 area as an official Save America's Treasures project. After the federal government terminated several Native American tribes, several non-enrolled descendants of the Rocky Boy band called Hill 57 home for a century and still use the site for cultural and religious practices. A meal will be served at the meeting. For more information, call Glen Gopher at 406-761-4781 or Mike Gopher at 406-370-6377. www.greatfallstribune.com/article/20090604/NEWS01/906040315/1002/Meeting+to+focus+on+Native+American+civil+rights
