Edmond conference to help schools connect to American Indians

EDMOND — Registration for the "Connecting to American Indian Learners” conference at the University of Central Oklahoma has been extended until Friday.
The conference is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 13 at the Nigh University Center. It focuses on different ways to integrate American Indian art and language into the K-12 core curriculum.
This year’s conference is organized by the Oklahoma Center for Arts Education at UCO.
The event features more than a dozen speakers including keynote speaker Juanita Pahdopony-Mithlo, a professor at the Comanche Nation College in Lawton.
"This conference addresses the issues of American Indian students and their relationships with faculty, curriculum content and their school,” said OCAE program manager Ines Burnham.
"We try to focus on how to bring the American Indian culture into the classroom and provide tools for the teachers to use to enhance their current curriculum,” Burnham said.
Registration is $75 and includes breakfast and lunch.
A certificate of completion will be given at the end of the conference and one hour of university credit is available.
The conference is sponsored by Chickasaw Nation, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Choctaw Nation, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Kiowa Culture Preservation Authority, Respect Diversity Foundation, American Indian Cultural Center & Museum and the Oklahoma Folklife Council.
